The Liberal Arts at Bard College
The liberal arts tradition is reflected in Bard’s tutorial system and interdisciplinary curriculum, which emphasize independent and creative thought—and developing the skills to express that thought with power and effect. Undergraduate students can earn a bachelor of arts degree in the following academic divisions: Arts; Languages and Literature; Science, Mathematics, and Computing; Social Studies; and Interdivisional Programs and Concentrations. They may moderate into a concentration, or cluster of related courses, in conjunction with Moderation into a program. They may also fulfill the requirements of a second focus in a subject of their choice that is unconnected to their primary field of study.
The Center for Indigenous Studies works with faculty in each of the four divisions to support the College’s commitment to interdisciplinary education and to ensure that Native American and Indigenous students, and Native American and Indigenous Studies methodologies, are accessible in each of the four undergraduate divisions. Academics at Bard focus on giving students a strong pedagogical foundation through Bard’s core curriculum, and then encourages students to explore individual academic interests to the best of their capacity. The Center for Indigenous Studies provides resources that enable students, and particularly Indigenous students with CfIS scholarships, to make the most of these academic resources and to provide support and assistance to make the most of their academic dreams. The Bard education prizes students developing wide curiosity and imbuing each student with a love of lifelong learning. Close contact with scholars who are teachers and who also remain active researchers in their field ensures that students receive the very best educational resources available. The team at the Center for Indigenous Studies provides an additional layer of advocacy, guidance and assistance to ensure students can thrive.
