Archives and Rethinking Place

This three year project brought a Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) approach to a revitalized American Studies curriculum. Rethinking Place offered an expansive understanding of land acknowledgment that went beyond addressing a single institution’s history in regards to Native peoples. Through public programming, curriculum building, student initiatives, and grant opportunities, Rethinking Place supported the Bard community in place-based NAIS work. This project is now archived through CfIS.

The Rethinking Place grant supported students, staff, and faculty with research and curriculum development assistance. The final year’s theme for Rethinking Place was Food & Memory, which engaged broad themes of food and land as sites of historical and cultural memory. Past Rethinking Place projects included lectures, sit-ins, conversations, performances, exhibitions, student presentations, readings, herbal and seed workshops, and more.
